School Story:

The '69 Baseball team lost its first two games: a 1-0 loss to Roosevelt, and a 6-5 loss to Rosary. From there the starting team went on a 19-game winning streak.
We won the CAC Conference with a 13-1 record. Ray Finke pitched a no-hitter against Aquinas, a 5-0 victory (where my brother went and was on their baseball team). Dan Boll, a junior, our SS, and I (3B) made All Conference. Our final record was 19-3. Wait, if you're paying attention, you might have noticed that I didn't mention the 3rd loss. Yes, you're correct. As it was, after we had won 10 games in a row, the Juniors were scheduled to go on a weekend retreat. We were in the middle of the Missouri State Tournament. It was a Friday afternoon. We had won our 1st game against Sumner and our second opponent was Central HS. But, we had one BIG problem. We were missing all of our Juniors including Larry Giovanni (1B), Dan Boll (SS), Larry Green (CF), and two of our best pitchers (Rich Guntli, and Jim Lang). Even so, it was a close game. We came back to tie the score in the bottom of the 7th 4-4, but Central scored 3 runs in the top of the 8th and we couldn't erase the deficit in the bottom of the inning, losing 7-4. Out of the State Tournament. To say the least that was a huge disappointment. For four years, I had been looking at the McBride 1964 State Champs and had dreamed of doing the same. Such is life. We went on to win our remaining 9 games to close out the season. It was an amazing year and I never had as much fun playing baseball as I did that season. I already mentioned the Juniors on the team but the rest of the starting lineup from our Senior class were: Marv Schaefer (C), Carl Bergmann (2B), Eddie Liszewski, and Larry Chik. A great team and a great year!
